EMG-triggered multi-channel electrical stimulation and denervation programmes can be used to train movements and functions. Functional training can help both intact and damaged nerves since the STIWELL® can stimulate up to four muscles simultaneously even if the muscles are denervated.

With FES, everyday movements, such as grasping objects or standing up, can be systematically trained on a regular basis. The patient starts the movement impulse independently and is assisted in executing the movement correctly by successive stimulations.

Therapy goals NMES

  • (Re)learning movements & functions
  • Functional improvement for peripheral nerve damage capable of regeneration (lower motor neuron)
  • Promotion of nerve regeneration (reinnervation)
  • Reduction of excessive muscle tension (spasticity)
  • Improved muscular endurance
  • Prevention of inactivity-related fibrosis and accumulation of adipose tissue
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Improvement of structural factors for contracture prophylaxis
  • Prevention and treatment of subluxation of shoulder joints
  • Functional hand training, e.g. after surgical procedures
  • Improvement of coughing fits

Therapy goals FES

  • Learning and re-learning lost movements used in everyday activities
  • Functional improvement of upper/lower limbs (arms/legs) & the torso
  • Increased independence when performing everyday activities
  • Prevention and treatment of subluxated and painful shoulder or complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
  • Improvement of sensory functions and kinaesthetic perception, e.g. in the event of neglect
  • Reduction of excessive muscle tension (spasticity)
  • Improved independence & quality of life
